Adopting A Dog From Us

Pendle Dogs in Need (known as Pendle Dogs) was founded in 2013 to help secure loving homes for dogs in need of help. We are a mainly foster based rescue, all our dogs are placed into foster homes to be assessed prior to being posted as available. However sometimes in emergencies we do use private boarding kennels until a suitable foster home can be found.

We do not have a base where people can come to meet our dogs. Our dogs needing homes are all posted on our website and Facebook page, along with everything we know about them and the sort of home they are looking for. It’s advised that potential adopters read this description very carefully before applying.

The first step towards getting a dog from us is to fill out an application form. This can be accessed by the apply now button below. Please be aware, we don’t do speculative type home checks, so please let us know which of the dogs in our care you are applying for.

Alternatively you can email us here – pendledogs@gmail.com

If successful, this will be followed up by a phone call and a home visit.

Please be aware our telephone numbers should be for emergencies ONLY and all enquiries about dogs should be made via email and application form.

PLEASE DO NOT RING TO ENQUIRE ABOUT DOGS.

Rehoming Your Dog

We are currently getting non stop requests to rehome people’s unwanted dogs – 100 plus each month!
In an ideal world rescues would have spaces for all the unwanted dogs and have people queuing up to adopt them but sadly this just isn’t the case! This means we have to prioritise spaces for the most at risk which is the unclaimed strays (pound dogs) and the welfare need dogs. We are a rescue not a rehoming organisation or an easy place to hand your dogs to when you simply don’t want them any more.
We need people to please stop recommending us to people who no longer want their dogs. We just can’t help and having to explain this, non stop all day, really is draining. We don’t want to say no or hear endless reasons why we must help, we have no choice!
We also can’t recommend other rescues as they are struggling as much as us.
The UK dog rescue system is currently in meltdown and there are no spaces in Rescues anywhere.
People need to stop and remember that most rescues are completely run by volunteers with no paid staff and no funding, other than what kind people donate or fund raise because they want to help dogs as much as us.
Please help us to spread the word, we are under enough pressure and need to try and ease the non stop requests from dog owners to take their dogs for no good reason.
We were set up to help the dogs that need us the most. The dogs that have no other chance if we don’t step in and help.
For every problem your dog gives you there is a solution that doesn’t involve rehoming them – we are happy to help you with finding those solutions where we can.

If you have an emergency

Our dogs are placed in homes in three ways.

  • Foster Dogs – these are temporary homes to assess a dog prior to them moving to their permanent adoptive home. For more information please visit our Fostering page.

  • Foster with a view to adopt – where someone wishes to adopt a dog and we have a dog that seems suitable, but they still need vet treatment and further assessment.

  • Trial to adopt – where an assessed dog is a match for a home we offer a trial period (One – four weeks) to make sure its right for everyone before adoption takes place.

  • Please be aware if you go on to adopt the dog then there will be an adoption fee of £250 to pay.

What Happens Next?

Each dog is individually assessed for what sort of home would suit them the best. We don’t have blanket restrictions on ages of children, other dogs, gardens, working hours etc. However it needs to be remembered that these are rescue dogs who come with their own histories and baggage which means there are few of them who we are comfortable placing around very small children or where they will be left alone for more than a few hours each day.

We never place our dogs in homes with un-neutered male dogs.

Our Adoption fees vary slightly – an average is £250 but this is slightly less for older dogs and sometimes more for puppies.

Our dogs are fully vet checked, vaccinated and if possible neutered prior to being adopted. However please be aware its not always possible for medical reasons to do so and so treatment may continue after adoption takes place.

Where its not possible for neutering to take place (due to age, season etc) then the adoption contract will include a clause requiring them to be neutered when the vet considers is the correct time or age. This is followed up by one of the managers.

Puppies are placed on a contract to neuter at an appropriate age, the cost of this is the responsibility of their new home.

Which Areas Do We Cover?

We are a volunteer run rescue who only rehome our dogs in a restricted area. This is rescue policy and non-negotiable. We know our limits and stick to them for the sake of our dogs and our small team of volunteers.

Our preferred area covers the whole of East Lancashire Pendle, Burnley, Blackburn with Darwen, Ribble Valley, Rossendale and Hyndburn. However on occasions we may extend our area to include Preston, Chorley, Bolton, Bury and Skipton, to find the right home for certain dogs. All our foster homes must fall within the preferred area on the map.
